Sebastian Inlet Report

04-10-15 FRIDAY: TGIF!

It's another beautiful morning at the Sebastian Inlet. We have a nice breeze and a mix of sun and clouds. Winds are blowing out of the South-Southeast at 11 mph, gusting to 15 and there is a moderate chop on the water. There are no NOAA advisories this morning and it looks like we have a nice weekend ahead of us with a chance of showers on Sunday. Always check the NOAA forecast prior to boating.

The catches from the north jetty have predominantly been Blues, Jacks and Ladyfish, but we are also seeing Reds, Sheepshead, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel and Black Drum, but not in big numbers. The Indian River and Sebastian River have been providing Spotted Trout, Tarpon, Reds, Snook and Sheepshead. A few Mangrove Snapper are starting to make appearances. We are seeing silver mullet in the water and are waiting for the large schools of baitfish to make their way to the inlet.

By now I'm sure most of your have heard about the bobcat at the Sebastian Inlet that nailed a 4' Atlantic Sharpnose Shark out of the surf, the photo and story have gone viral. Living in a cave? Then check out our first photo today. Vero Beach Resident John Bailey took this amazing photo while walking the south beach a couple of days ago. The big bobcat was stalking something in the water and at first, John thought it was a dog. He was fortunate enough to have his camera along and got a quick shot of the big cat before it dropped its prey and headed for nearby brush. Bobcats are fairly common site at the inlet and on the barrier island. A few years ago one of our readers sent in a photo of a bobcat swimming from one of the spoil islands in the river to the barrier island, so obviously they are not afraid of the water.
Our second shot is courtesy of SISP Ranger Ed Perry. Ed supplied this shot of a momma bobcat and her two kittens.
Our third photo today features 10 year old Liam Scott of Cornwall, NY with a large Sheepshead he landed while in town visiting his grandparents.
