Sebastian Inlet Report
01-16-15 FRIDAY: BLUES, BLACK DRUM, C/R REDS, SHEEPSHEAD, SPECKLED TROUT, A FEW C/R SNOOK AND POMPANO
THE SOUTH CATWALK IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
We have a cold, windy morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the North-Northwest at 25 mph, gusting to 30 and there is a moderate chop on the water. Overcast skies make it seem even colder this morning and there is a chance of rain through the day with conditions clearing late this afternoon.
In spite of the less than desirable conditions this week, we've seen a lot of Blues, quite a few Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, big C/R Reds and a few Pompano, making the trip to the inlet worthwhile. Black Drum and Sheepshead have been partial to clams this week. Sheepshead will take small crabs, sand fleas or shrimp and occasionally will hit on jigs if they are tipped with a crustacean. Black Drum will take clams or dead and live shrimp; they are scent feeders and love the smelly baits. The big Reds have been taking jigs, bucktails and plugs on the outgoing tide.
Our first photo today features Zach Carroll with a big C/R Red. Zach reported that on the outgoing tide, Black Drum were biting well. Around 5:00 p.m., Reds starting hitting bucktails and this hefty 44" Red hit a jig. The Red was released unharmed after the photo.
Noah Van Epp of Merritt Island fished the north jetty and landed the C/R Snook in our second photo, using a jig. Noah reported that a few other C/R Snook were landed during his time on the jetty and the big Reds were non-stop.
Our last photo today features Chuck Fischer of Satellite Beach. Chuck landed his two good sized Black Drum using shrimp.
