08-20-14 WEDNESDAY: A GOOD VARIETY OF FISH AND LOTS OF BAIT IN THE WATER
THE TIP OF THE NORTH JETTY IS CLOSED TODAY, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FOR WEATHER STATION REPAIRS. THE REST OF THE NORTH JETTY WILL BE OPEN. THE SOUTH CATWALK IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION. THE WORK WILL BE ONGOING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, THE NORTH CATWALK WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THE WORK ON THE SOUTH CATWALK IS COMPLETED, AND THEN THE NORTH CATWALK WILL CLOSE FOR REPAIR.
We have another still morning at the inlet. The wind is barely moving (about 2 mph) out of the North-Northwest, gusting to 4. Insect repellent would be a good idea, no wind = no see 'ums. We're still seeing a lot of bait in the water and quite a few fish. Mangrove Snapper, C/R Snook, big and slot Reds, a couple of nice Permit, Ladyfish, Jacks, Bonito and Tarpon have been slicing through the schools of bait and occasionally one will find its way onto a lucky angler's hook.
Our first photo today is a fine example of one lucky angler. Mo from Harmony fished the north jetty's afternoon outgoing tide. Mo started off fishing for Snapper with no success, then he witnessed an angler catch a nice Permit. Mo netted some blue crabs to try his luck. A few minutes later he was engaged in a fight with a monster Permit! Although conditions were less than ideal, if you were lucky enough to have crabs for bait, there was a 30 minute window that everyone was landing Permit. This beast weighed 40 lbs.
Our second photo is courtesy of Luke Fay. Max Fay (L) and TJ "The Panda" Knapp (R) had good luck fishing the flats over the weekend. Using mojarra and shrimp, the duo landed a couple of slot Reds and a nice Trout.
Christian Ruiz of Orlando sent in our last photo today. Christian fished the inlet with no luck on Saturday, but happened to catch this incredible sunset. A bad day fishing still beats a good day working!
