08-11-14 MONDAY: MANGROVE SNAPPER, JACKS, C/R SNOOK, REDS, TARPON, BONITO AND A FEW FLOUNDER
It's gorgeous at the inlet this morning. There is a nice breeze blowing out of the South-Southwest at 7 mph, gusting to 11 and the water is clam with a light ripple on the surface. If you take a look at our tide chart, you'll see the severe tides due to the super moon. Last night was the largest full moon of the year coming 31,000 miles closer than its furthest point from Earth. It was closer than the July and coming September super moon will be. It also coincides with the Perseids meteor shower, which brings 80 - 100 meteors per hour, but the super moon may interfere with the ability to see them.
Tommy Turowski of the Sebastian Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop reported that over the weekend, Mangrove Snapper were the best bite. A few real nice ones came over the rails along with some Jacks. Big Reds were hitting poppers on the outgoing tide, a couple of summer Flounder were landed and Bonito have been schooling just out of casting distance. The Snook and Tarpon were very active in the evening hours.
Today's photos were taken Friday off the north jetty. Our first photo features Norman Downnie of Poinciana with his "prize" of the morning, a decent sized Blue Runner. Norman fished the entire night Thursday into Friday morning and landed two Blue Runners and a ton of Catfish!
Photo two features Mike Ricciardi of Vero Beach. Mike landed several chunky Mangrove Snapper off the north jetty using shrimp. Overall a slow morning, but at least he didn't go home empty handed. Mostly, anglers were just feeding the fish.
