Sebastian Inlet Report

02-12-14 WEDNESDAY: BLACK DRUM, SHEEPSHEAD, SPANISH MACKEREL, BLUES, SEA TROUT AND SNOOK 

We have a gorgeous morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the South-Southwest at 6 mph, gusting to 8 and there is a moderate chop on the water. A small craft advisory will be in effect from this afternoon through Thursday evening. Always check the NOAA forecast prior to venturing offshore. 

Yesterday morning was pretty good in comparison to the past couple of weeks. Quite a few of our regulars were on the north jetty yesterday. Mike Ricciardi of Vero Beach, Chuck Fischer of Satellite Beach and Tony Swiderski of Sebastian landed some enormous Black Drum in the early morning hours into late morning. Mike reported that the Drum were taking live shrimp, which is unusual as they feed primarily by smell and dead, stinky shrimp or clams are their usual choices. Mike theorized that the fact that the water has warmed up and shrimp are starting to run, could be the reason they prefer live shrimp right now. Several Snook hook ups, two by Tony Swiderski, both cut off before he could land them, several other anglers had break offs as well. Tony kept landing oversized Drum after his limit of one over 24" was landed, but did land another that was 20" which he kept. The bag limit on Black Drum is 5, only one may be over 24", the rest must be between 14" - 24". A beautiful 23" Spotted Trout was landed by Terry Hammond at daybreak, Charlie Bosco of Melbourne Beach landed a C/R 36" Red on a live croaker. Several Sheepshead and some small Spanish Mackerel came over the rails as well. Mike ended up with a 26" Black Drum and two Sheepshead. 

I believe the luckiest angler on the north jetty yesterday morning had to be Steve Collier of Palm Bay. Steve arrived on the north jetty in the late morning. After about 10 minutes, Steve landed the prize of the morning, a 30" slot Snook using live shrimp. Steve wasn't sure what to do after that, stay and fish or just go home and enjoy his catch. Steve is featured in our first photo today, it is our first slot Snook since the season opened on Feb. 1st.

Victor Montalvo of Orlando is featured in our last photo today. Victor was using clam and shrimp combos to land this Bluefish and Whiting.
