It's going to be a hot one today. The wind is barely blowing out of the North-Northeast but every now and then, we'll have a 2 mph gust! Be sure to take insect repellent, the no see 'ums love these conditions! The water is calm, with a light ripple on the surface and the water temperature is in the low 70's this morning. It seems to be warming up a few degrees every day, so maybe our cold water upwelling is coming to an end.
We spoke with Tommy Turowski of the Sebastian Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop who relayed that the Snook are still very active, even with the colder water. Please remember, this is Snook spawning season, so handle those catch and release fish with extra care. If you land a Snook off the north jetty or catwaks, please lower the Snook back into the water with a net and try not to keep it out of the water too long. We need those Snook in good health to make more Snook! This suggestion should be applied to any catch and release fish; it's a long drop to the water from the north jetty. There are a lot of Mangrove Snapper in the water as well as Jacks and a lot of bait fish. Hopefully the bite will pick up for some table fare.
Our angler in the spotlight is 11 year old Greg Lachman of Perroy, Switzerland. Greg is visiting Vero Beach and made his way out onto the north jetty when he landed this beautiful Snook. It was late afternoon and Greg was using dead shrimp, the Snook weighed about 25 lbs. Inlet regular Danny Waite, helped this young man land this catch of a lifetime (so far)! The Snook was quickly photographed and released unharmed.
Our second photo is of Rickey Meier of Vero Beach. Rickey was fishing the catwalk at night about 10:30, Rickey was getting restless and started feeding out line, about 275 yards out, he got NAILED. He hooked up with this 45 lb monster Snook! Rickey has an annual pass and is a regular at the inlet, but had never seen a Snook this size, nor had anyone else that evening! He used a 12" pogey to land this beauty, which was lowered back into the water with his bridge net and safely released.
