Hot weather continues around the Treasure Coast...and the country! It's been a hot month, but we have been getting on the water early and getting off before the heat of the afternoon sets in on us. Early mornings or late evenings have allowed us great fishing weather. It's the perfect time of year to get out early and enjoy some great top water opportunities on the river.
The turning basin in Fort Pierce has went off the past week as the glass minnows fill the river. Spanish mackerel, jacks, ladyfish, bluefish and even some bonito are out there ravaging the bait schools with the incoming tides. Small shiny lures on light tackle can get you in on some exciting action this month. There have been a good number of boats out there fishing the bait schools the past week with good success on the fish. You can also find some tarpon rolling around the same area.
Our trout bite slowed down this week on the flats. We are catching a few nice trout on top water lures, but the bite has slowed down with the heat on the water. Try four to six feet of water during the day for them. Drop offs and sand holes have worked best for the trout. Redfish have continued to stay in the shallows during the day. Most of the reds that we caught this week have been in less than two feet of water. Top water lures and DOA shrimp can help you hook up on some upper slot fish this month. We have been fishing north of Fort Pierce most of the month. Try around Queen's Cove and Harbor Branch in the early mornings.
Snapper and sheephead have been around channel edges and bridges this month. Live or dead shrimp work best for them. The beaches have held whiting and you might also find some snook, bluefish and jacks around any of the bait schools along the surf. Don't forget that snook season will reopen on September 1st and that's not far off. Lots of eager anglers will be getting ready for that opening night. August might be a hot month, but the fishing has been good!
