Winds are blowing out of the West-Southwest at 5 mph this morning and there is a light ripple on the water. Fishing remains hit or miss.
Snook have been on the active side in the early morning hours and late at night. Snook breed in the summer and the season is closed. If you happen to land a Snook, use extra caution when releasing as we need those Snook to get out make more Snook! Lowering them off the north jetty via net is preferred, as with any large catch and release fish. The fish can get exhausted (like the angler) during a good fight and the drop from the north jetty can stun the fish and make recovery more difficult. Thanks for protecting our precious resources!
Bonita were schooling around the inlet yesterday, as were Mangrove Snapper and Spanish Mackerel. A few nice ones have been landed for those in the right spot at the right time!
Skip and Sean Stowers of Kissimmee sent in an update on their last three trips to the inlet, which haven't been as successful as they normally are. They are fishing in the afternoon and evenings. The largest fish they've landed has been 12 - 15 lbs. snook, also landed 6 - 7 Sea Trout in the 4 - 6 lb. range, a few Reds that were nearly keeper size and small to medium sized Jacks. They also saw Bonita, but didn't get any takers. They saw two guys drifting crabs off the north jetty land a couple of good sized Permit.
Our first photo today was obviously garnering some attention, as we had two people send in a photo of the same fish! The huge Snook was landed by an unidentified angler on a Pinfish around 9:00 a.m. Shortly afterward, Big Reds began to surface in the inlet hitting topwater plugs but broke off after a brief fight.
