07-06-12 FRIDAY: JACKS, BONITA, MAGROVE SNAPPER, SPANISH MACKEREL, REDS, C/R SNOOK AND BLUES
It's gorgeous at the inlet this morning. There's a light wind blowing out of the West-Southwest at 3 mph and the water is calm. It is a good morning for surf fishing or boating, but always check the coastal forecast prior to going offshore, as conditions can change very quickly. When the winds are calm in the warmer months, the no see 'ums come out, so be sure to take insect repellent with you if you head to the inlet today or over the weekend. It looks like we have a nice weekend ahead of us, go to the inlet and wet a line!
This morning we have some good sized Jacks being landed along with some nice Mangrove Snapper. We've had a strange phenomenon happening, good sized Bonita have been coming in on the incoming tides, some in the 8 - 10 lb range. Bonita are normally caught in deeper waters, so this has been a real treat for our shore-based anglers. Big Reds, catch and release Snook, a smattering of Spanish Mackerel and Blues have also been making appearances.
Our first angler today is Hank Baron of Grant, who landed this real nice Spanish Mackerel from the north jetty on Tuesday. This Mackerel was 22.5" to the fork of the tail, and was landed while free lining a live greenie. Nice catch Hank!
Nam Bui, Phillip Ping and Thang Nguyen, all of Orlando, made it back to the inlet to go Shark fishing. They were using mojarra to try to land some "shark bait" but all ended up with C/R Snook instead. Phillip landed a 35" C/R Snook on a new custom rod that he built and is featured in our second photo today. Nam had a big Snook on the line that outsmarted him by wrapping itself around the piling and breaking off. Thang Nguyen hooked up with a 32" C/R Snook a few minutes later.
