Sebastian Inlet Report
05-31-12 THURSDAY: SHEEPSHEAD, SPOTS, SNOOK AND ONE BIG PERMIT!
REMINDER: This is the last day of Snook season. The season closes at midnight tonight and will remain closed until September 1st.
It is a gorgeous morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the West-Northwest at 4 mph and the water is very calm. It looks like a great morning for offshore fishing or surf fishing! This morning fishing is on the slow side but we heard that a big Permit was landed off the north jetty; hopefully we'll have a photo for you tomorrow! A few Spots and Sheepshead are being landed this morning as well. This morning, Tony Swiderski of Sebastian landed a couple of undersized Snook which were returned to the water.
We received a report from Skip and Sean Stowers of Kissimmee on an adventure they had at the inlet last Thursday night. It was a relatively slow night for the usual fish, but Sharks were abundant. On a whim, they floated out a large Ladyfish with 100 lb monofilament line and 400 lb test cable leader. In seven and a half feet of water, Sean hooked up with a Shark that ran several hundred yards of 100 lb test mono on a Penn Senator # 14 reel and it never stopped the big fish. The huge, steel forged hook and a commercial Shark rig straightened right out and it was gone!

05-30-12 WEDNESDAY: SHEEPSHEAD, LOOKDOWNS, JACKS, SNOOK AND REDS
It's another beautiful morning at the Sebastian Inlet. Winds are blowing out of the West-Southwest at 10 mph.
We received an update from inlet regular Mike Ricciardi of Vero Beach who gave us a report on the activities off the north jetty. Chuck Fischer of Satellite Beach got the only Snook of the morning about 5 a.m. on the tide turn using live shrimp. The Spanish Mackerel did a disappearing act yesterday, none were caught. There were a few Lookdowns, Jacks and Sheepshead and one Ladyfish landed. Mike landed a 15" Mangrove Snapper using live shrimp and it is featured in our second photo today. Richard Pearce of Sebastian strolled out onto the jetty around 9:30 a.m. and threw in a dead bionic shrimp and hooked up with the 30" C/R Red in about two minutes, Richard is featured in our third photo today. Mike also reported a couple of young guys who were fishing with heavy tackle using blue claw crab and hooked up twice with what he thinks was Goliath Grouper. They fought the fish for a long time, but ultimately the fish cut the line on the rocks at the tip of the jetty.
From Whites Tackle - Fort Pierce
Inshore, snook fishing has been good as we approach the summer closed season (June 1 through August 31). Fresh water run off stimulates the snook and they get very active during the summer through the rainy season. Trout fishing has been good across the lagoon and anglers are finding them with both live bait and artificial lures. A few mangrove snapper have been caught along the channel edges with live shrimp. Tarpon have moved along the beach and into the inlet at Ft. Pierce and will take a live pilchard or live mullet.

There has been a good amount of Snook being caught all over the river and they are catching them in the Inlet too. The Bridges have been hot and Captain Greg has done a regular bang up job on Keeper Snook and some nice Drum at the Roosevelt Bridge over the past week. I am hearing that anglers have been doing well at night fishing the lights.Try casting a livie too also one angler caught 10 Snook at the 10 cent bridge using free lined shrimp at the right tide ..
There is still a good trout bite going on DOA 1/4 oz Shrimp and Cals rigged on a jighead have done well on the Trout .Some anglers are fishing the Pot Holes or bare areas between the flats with Shimp and a Popping cork for great results.

05-29-12 TUESDAY: FISHING IS ON THE SLOW SIDE
It's another lovely morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the South-Southwest at 10 mph and there is a moderate chop on the water.
There was a lot of activity at the inlet this past weekend but unfortunately fishing was on the slow side. We had a smattering of fish in good variety but nothing was really running. A few Snook, Spanish Mackerel, Pompano, Mangrove Snapper, Blues, Sea Trout, Jacks and Flounder were landed but none in large numbers. Sharks have been pretty active and a few brave souls got out and tangled with them and a few unsuspecting anglers had their catches stolen.
Our photo today features Steve Kalemba, manager of Black Dog Bait & Tackle in Melbourne Beach. Steve took a day off to fish the north jetty and landed a couple of Sheepshead using live shrimp. sing shrimp.

Inshore, snook fishing in the Ft. Pierce inlet over the last few days has been very good. The snook that are being caught are large and over the size slot. Kadri Benton reported catching snook over the weekend with one of them in the 35#-38# range on top water lures. Trout fishing has been solid to the south of our part of the lagoon. The trout have been taking live bait, DOA Cal minnows and Berkley Gulp.

Lookin Around
Snook and Croakers have been the fish of Juno Pier with a suprise keeper Mutton Snapper. Reports of a few Cubra Snapper at the inlet off the rocks. Its been a little slow with all this rain but if looking for that last snook, I would check out the Spillways to see if the locks are open.......

05-25-12 FRIDAY: SPANISH MACKEREL, SPOTS, ATLANTIC SPADEFISH, SHEEPSHEAD, BLUES, SEA TROUT, FLOUNDER AND SNOOK
Winds are blowing out of the North-Northeast at 6 mph and there is a moderate chop on the water this morning. It's a beautiful morning!
Fishing has picked up in the past few days which is great news for all of our shore based anglers. The best daytime action on the north jetty has mainly consisted of Spanish Mackerel. A lot of greenies (menhaden) are schooling around the jetties attracting the spotted beauties; although most of the greenies have been small and difficult to net. The catches also include Sheepshead, Spots, Atlantic Spadefish, large and small Jacks, and Blues. On the flats you can still find Sea Trout and a few Flounder. We are seeing a lot of Snook activity in the evenings. We have one more week of Snook season before it closes until September 1st.
We received an update from Nam Bui of Orlando who fished the north jetty last night with his buddy Thang Nguyen. Nam reported Snook were everywhere and a few were in the slot. Nam's first Snook of the night was a potential keeper but got it slammed by a Shark that broke his line, taking his lure and the Snook with it! Nam was using windcheaters for all his catches. The 37" Snook in our first photo today was landed and released by Nam, when it was revived and started to swim away, it got eaten by a Shark as well! Thang Nguyen hooked up with a good sized Snook but it wrapped itself up in the rocks and broke off. Nam then caught a real nice 32" Snook that made up for the earlier losses.
Photo two is of Frank Mohamed of Kissimmee who was fishing the north jetty when he hooked up with his big Jack using live shrimp. This was one of two that Frank landed that morning.

INSHORE
Snook, redfish and trout have been feeding on live shrimp or soft baits. We recommend you try any of the D.O.A soft baits but good reports coming in of anglers using #304 Rootbeer shad and #406 Arkansas glow in shad. Spoil islands and Wabasso Bridge are still holding some nice size trout as well A few reports trickling in of flounder, anglers having the best luck are fishing just North of the Inlet and close to the inlet in the flats.
INLET
Spanish mackerel, spots, blues, trout, jacks and permit are coming over the rails/gunnels. Redfish and Snook are being caught at night and early morning using pinfish and/or live shrimp. Good reports of Grouper being caught on the ledges of the channel.
Surf
The tarpon bite has picked up in the surf. Reports of whiting in good numbers and the pompanobite has slowed down but for best results for those anglers targeting pompano, try North of the inlet. If you like to shark fish, there are plenty of those being caught right at dusk.

05-24-12 THURSDAY: SPANISH MACKEREL, SPOTS, SHEEPSHEAD, ATLANTIC SPADEFISH, SEA TROUT, BLUES, SNOOK AND REDS
It's another beautiful morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the Northwest at 5 mph and there is a light chop on the water.
Fishing has picked up some; there was a lot more activity than in the past few weeks. There were a lot of small greenies schooling around the north jetty and they were attracting Spanish Mackerel. Quite a few good sized Macks were landed for those lucky enough to have greenies for bait. Diane Buyce of Melbourne landed eight nice fish before noon, and another trio of anglers were pulling them in one after another. We also saw some small to medium sized Atlantic Spadefish, a few Sheepshead, small to medium sized Spots, and a Margate . Mike Ricciardi of Vero Beach was on the north jetty in the early morning hours and also reported a Snook bite, before 6:30 a.m., which produced two oversized fish and several cut-offs. Chuck Fischer of Satellite Beach landed one that was 37" which was returned to the water.
Speaking of oversized Snook, Mike Misserville of Sebastian landed the beautiful Snook in our first photo today off the north jetty on Sunday around 9:30 a.m. This beautiful Snook was 42.5" long and was returned to the water right after the photo.

It's another beautiful morning at the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the Southwest at 8 mph and there is a moderate chop on the water.
There is a Spanish Mackerel bite going on this morning according to Tommy Turowski at the Sebastian Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop. There have also been some Snook and Reds (mostly oversized) Blues, Jacks, a few Pompano off the beaches, and Sea Trout and Flounder on the flats.
Our first photo today is of Andy who landed his very first Snook using a homemade red and white bucktail. This beautiful Snook measured 41", and was quickly released after the photo to go out and make more Snook! Rhim of Orlando fishing the north jetty reported abundant Ladyfish and Blues.
The next photo is of Nam who landed a nice 23" Sea Trout using a soft plastic jig and Thang who landed a massive Bluefish that measured 33" on a large swimbait

Inshore, there are tarpon beginning to show along the beaches and in the Ft. Pierce inlet and anglers are getting some action on live pilchards and live mullet. Snook fishing remains good as we approach the season closing on June 1st. Snook and trout have also been found cruising the flats early in the morning with reports of some good catches coming from both live bait and lures. The dock line along the west side of the lagoon has been good for anglers fishing later in the day for trout, snook and redfish. There have been a few reports of some flounder catches off the south jetty as well with live bait working best.

05-22-12 TUESDAY: SPOT PORGY'S, SPANISH MACKEREL, BLUES, SEA TROUT, REDS AND SNOOK
It's gorgeous at the inlet this morning. Winds are blowing out of the South-Southwest at 6 mph and there is a light chop on the water.
Fishing remains about the same; slow with some real nice fish coming over the rails sporadically. A lot of Spot Porgy's have been stealing baits and some are being caught. An occasional Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Sea Trout, Redfish or Snook will find its way to the jetty anglers. Most of the Reds and Snook have been big, oversized breeders and returned to the water.
Our angler of the day is John Tercovich of Merritt Island. John fished the north jetty and landed his first Redfish, ever. This beautiful 32" C/R Red was landed on live shrimp and will probably keep John coming back for more!

05-21-12 MONDAY: SPANISH MACKEREL, SHEEPSHEAD, SPOTS, REDS, SNOOK, JACKS AND A COUPLE OF PERMIT
It's another beautiful morning at the Sebastian Inlet. Winds are blowing out of the West-Southwest at 5 mph and the water is calm. There is a small swell at second peak this morning for the surfers.
A few anglers landed Spots, some Spanish Mackerel, and one big Redfish came over the rails. Diane Buyce of Melbourne was using live shrimp and was sure she had a slot Snook on the line, because it behaved just like one. When she got him in, she realized it was an oversized C/R Red that was 32". That was a bitter-sweet catch, but the day wasn't a total loss for Diane, she landed two decent Spanish Mackerel using greenies another angler had given her.
Some nice Reds were landed over the weekend, some Blues, oversized Snook, a couple of Permit, Jacks and Sheepshead came over the rails according to Tommy and the Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop.

Inshore, tarpon have populated the Ft. Pierce inlet and are active at sunset and into the night. The best baits for the tarpon are live pilchards or live mullet. Reports from the flats over the week end included snook and big trout in skinny water on live bait. DOA Cal minnows and DOA shrimp have been producing catches of trout, redfish and snook around the docks along Indian River Drive on the west side of the lagoon.

Snook, redfish and trout have been feeding on live shrimp or plastic baits in the flats. We recommend to try the Yo-Zuri 3D minnow 70. Spoil islands and Wabasso Bridge are holding some nice size trout! In the channel, tripple tail have been feeding on live shrimp near channel markers, and grouper continue you to feed on the channel ledges. On windy days, many anglers are heading north into the sebastian river and are having fun catching tarpon and flounder!
INLET
Snook are still being caught in the inlet, but the bite is starting to slow down. Some redfish are being caught at night and early morning. A lot of bait fish are being spotted, and following these bait fish are said to be jack, spanish mackerel and permit. Grouper are being caught on the ledges on the north side of the channel.

05-18-12 FRIDAY: TGIF!
This morning, winds are blowing out of the North at 6 mph and the water has a light ripple. We have sunny skies this morning and it's beautiful at the inlet.
We've had Pompano biting in the surf, north and south of the inlet. Clams, sand fleas, live shrimp, small crabs, cut squid are all good baits, but for those who prefer artificial baits, try using 1/2 oz - 3/4 oz jigs with short, nylon skirts. Heavier flies will also work, those with lead eyes or epoxy heads. The Sea Trout bite continues on the flats. Live shrimp, baitfish, mullet or pinfish are effective on this species as are swimming plugs, topwater plugs, streamers and poppers. This morning, there has been a Redfish bite along with the usual Spots, a few Spanish Mackerel and Snook cut-offs.

05-17-12 THURSDAY: BLUES, SPOTS AND POMPANO
We have overcast skies and rain on and off and the inlet this morning. Winds are blowing out of the South-Southwest at 5 mph and the water is calm.
The calm seas have been good for surf fishing and Pompano are starting to show up on the north and south beaches. Some Blues were landed off the north jetty this morning along with a few Spots.
From Whites Tackle - Ft Pierce
Snook fishing has been good on the south jetty overnight with anglers using First Light snook jigs and live bait. The area bridges have been good around the channel edges for snook after sunset. Anglers have been complaining about slime grass scattered in the lagoon, making it difficult to retrieve lures and live bait.

Bait Casting Tips
Alot of people get bait casters then give up on them because they have a hard time casting them. Here are a few tips on casting and getting that bird nest out........
1) When you first get the reel put only Half a Spool of "CHEAP" MONO LINE on, not the line you will fish with... remember you are learning.
2) They make this yellow plastic weight just for learning how to cast .....you should be able to pick this up at any sports store or walmart.
3)
You got to practice, practice, practice then do it some more. after you feel you got it practice some more then go fill up the reel with your FISHING LINE...........
You will get a BIRDS NEST....even though you have casting down, heres a few tips on getting it OUT....

05-16-12 WEDNESDAY: ATLANTIC SPADEFISH, SPANISH MACKEREL, SPOTS, SNOOK AND REDS
We have another overcast morning at the inlet, but it is beautiful. Winds are blowing out of the Southwest at 4 mph and the water is very calm.
We received an update from inlet regular Diane Buyce of Melbourne who reported on yesterday's north jetty activities. She had a couple of chances at Snook at slack tide and was pretty sure the first one was in the slot, but he ran by the rocks for one last run and cut the line. Tony Swiderski of Sebastian landed the only keeper Snook of the morning. Diane fished several different spots for bottom fish and ended up with several small Atlantic Spadefish and a Chub. Diane also reported a couple of guys fishing from a boat were hooking up with Reds and Snook using croakers, but were fishing a little close to the jetty and kept getting tangled with the shore based anglers. Quite a few glass minnows were around the jetty and probably Spanish Mackerel, but she had no luck with them.

From Capt. Charlie @ Fishing Center - Ft. Pierce
The winds are calming down, but the rainy season began this week bringing much needed water to the Treasure Coast.
Look for trout to be in two to five feet of water. Using top water, DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and live baits, you should find some nice sized ones. Bear Point, Harbor Branch and the east shoreline south of Fort Pierce are great areas to begin. We found our redfish under the docks this week. DOA shrimp and live bait can find one for you. The snook bite around the jetties at night has been fair this week using feather jigs and live baits. The spillways will be very active with the recent rains. A rootbeer DOA TerrorEyz is a great lure to use around those areas.
The surf will hold whiting and the bridges will have sheephead, snapper and a few black drum. Live or dead shrimp are good around the bridges. There are a few tarpon showing up around the inlets and along the beach and it should only improve now. Offshore is getting underway now that the winds are subsiding and boaters can get out on the ocean. It's gonna be a good season! May is always a great month to enjoy the fishing!

From Henry @ Snook-Nook Jensen Beach
We have beautiful weather all week then the week end, the weatherman turns on the wind weapon.
Surf fishing has seemed to settle to our summer pattern, Blues early, mid morning it will be Whiting with a mix of Pompano and throw in a few Snook and it makes for a nice day. Slot Snook seem to be at the beach taking plugs and live baits, fishing early you will have to deal with the Blues, but these fish are up close, north and south not east, shallow water is their location. Yes, a small Whiting will get their attention for you anglers that want to sit but I am a walker, have to keep moving and I don’t know why. The only catch not reported has been a Tarpon, when that happens it is summer.
Trout, early in the shallows then deeper as the sun rises, mix in a Red or three with a Flounder and you must be fishing in the area of Power Plant, top water, soft rubber and the poor old shrimp have kept anglers busy. Lots of Ribbon Fish at the bridges, careful these fish have big teeth and lots of them, if you are not sure cut the leader and attach a new hook, best to be safe not chewed on. Plenty of Drum, Snapper and Blue Fish to keep busy with and wait for the sun to go down then it is Snook, our bridges make for good fishing.

05-15-12 TUESDAY: SNOOK, JACKS, SPOTS,
SPANISH MACKEREL AND SEA TROUT
Skies are overcast at the inlet this morning, but it is gorgeous. Winds are barely blowing out of the East at 1-2 mph and the water is calm. There is a small swell and a few surfers are in the water taking advantage. As always, please use caution when casting off the north side of the north jetty when surfers are present.
Yesterday morning there was a little action with Snook according to Chuck Fischer of Satellite Beach. Tony Swiderski of Sebastian landed a short C/R Snook and several others had cut-offs. The bait of choice was mojarra. There is a lot of baitfish in the water right now and schools of Jacks and Snook can be seen following them in the clean, clear water. There will long periods of small catches of Spanish Mackerel, Spots and Jacks then a spectacular fish will find its way to a jetty angler, like the several big Permit that have shown up lately.
For those of you who get tired of seeing photos of fish, our featured photo is courtesy of Pam Winegar. Pam and her husband were coming up from the beach on the north side of the north parking lot on Sunday, when they spotted this Bobcat.

Skies are overcast this morning at the inlet, but it is beautiful. Winds are blowing out of the Southwest at 2 mph and the water has a light chop. There is a small swell for the surfers on the north side; please use caution when casting off the north side of the north jetty.
Over the weekend there was a good variety of fish landed. Sea Trout are still being landed on the flats. Sheepshead, Snook, Reds, Flounder, Jacks, Spots, Blues and a couple of big Permit were landed on Friday afternoon. Earl Truman of Vero Beach landed a big Permit around 4:00 p.m. and an unidentified angler landed one an hour earlier.
Our photo today features Thang Nguyen of Orlando, who fished the inlet he was sure he had a keeper on the line but when he got it over the rails, realized it was an inch short. Thang released the Snook so it could grow up a little!

From Whites Tackle - Ft Pierce
Inshore, snook fishing over the week end improved with the windy weather. Reports of snook and tarpon from anglers fishing the south jetty at Ft. Pierce were good with most fish taken on flare jigs. Trout fishing in the lagoon has been good with most reports coming from the north county waters. Waders are still finding some good trout fishing on both sides of the lagoon mostly south around Bear Point and the dock line on the west side.
From Capt Joe Ward @ The Bait Shack - Ft. Pierce
INSHORE - Look for the summer patterns to get in full swing and this means that you will need to fish early in the morning and just before dark. There should be some big trout, redfish and catch and release snook around since we didn't have much winter weather. Try the flats around the Moorings for all three fish and also keep and eye out for a tarpon or two. Live baits like a pilchard, mullet or a pigfish will be hard to beat. If you like artificial bait then you will need to try a Zara Spook or a Top Dog Jr. in the natural color. Down to the south you will want to try the channel markers along the channel edges for a tripletail Use a live shrimp and a jig head. The snapper bite along the channel edges should also be good starting around the full moon. The baits of choice will be live shrimp, mojarra or a small pinfish.
