Sebastian Inlet Report
02-08-12 WEDNESDAY: SNOOK, SHEEPSHEAD, REDS, FLOUNDER AND POMPANO
It's overcast at the inlet again this morning. Clouds will hover over the inlet today and we have a good chance of rain on and off all day. Winds are blowing out of the North at 16 mph and gusting to 21. Small craft should exercise caution.
Fishing has picked up some and anglers are breathing a sigh of relief! Snook have been cooperating since the season opened as well as keeper Reds and Sheepshead. We received an update from inlet regular Mike, who was on the north jetty yesterday morning. Even though it was a little wet, it didn't stop the regular Snook crowd from getting out there for their morning ritual. Live shrimp continues to be the bait of choice; the only problem is the Terns are taking 30% - 50% of the baits before they can sink to depth. There have been some grumbling, angry anglers as most of the shrimp are "hand selected' and cost twice as much as a dozen regular shrimp! The birds are getting quite good at diving for the bait as soon as it hits the water! Mike reported that despite the birds, rocks, cut-offs, over and undersized fish, there were three slot Snook landed. A couple of large Sheepshead and a Black Drum came over the rails as well. Mike said the Black Drum bite has fallen off in the past few weeks with only 1 or 2 being landed per day. Mike landed a 21" Black Drum yesterday along with a Sheepshead but it was raining too hard to get a photo. On Tuesday, four Pompano were landed on the outgoing tide.
In our photo, L - R are Tony, Diane and Dave . Tony and Diane have two beautiful slot Snook and Dave has a huge Sheepshead, all landed on shrimp.
Please remember, if you accidentally hook a bird, reel it in and remove the hook. Do not cut the line! The bird has very little chance of survival if a hook is left in its beak or wing. If you are unsure of how to remove the hook, ask for help. Many of the inlet regulars are proficient at removing hooks from birds.
